Making a Difference One Person at a Time

You will get back far more than you give- JoAnn Borden

As a retired special education teacher who loves to volunteer, I have found a wonderful place to do so in Saratoga Bridges Day program.  I have been volunteering at Alpha on the Ballston Spa campus since last summer.  I absolutely love the people who come to take part in the variety of activities provided each day.  I soon found a niche for my other passion which is music and singing.  I was able to start a music group and take great joy in singing with the clients every Monday.  Not only do I teach them, but they have taught me valuable lessons in acceptance and how to slow down the pace of my life just a bit.  If you are considering a place to volunteer, I highly recommend Saratoga Bridges.  I can guarantee that you will get back far more than you give.

Creating camaraderie and empowered learning with Sarah Green

As a dancer for over 15 years, I have gained a truly versatile skill set that I have been able to successfully translate as a dance teacher at Saratoga Bridges. I created a camaraderie that was truly special and empowered immense learning among everyone involved.

She respects people and I like the way she puts our activities together- Joan

I really enjoy Monday’s when JoAnn brings in her guitar. I like singing with her. She respects people and I like the way she puts our activities together. She has good energy around her and has a wonderful spirit.

I am really happy to be able to learn from them- Emily

I love working with volunteers because I was able to take what they taught us and be independent to make and create my own pieces. They are great teachers. I find them so helpful, and I am really happy to be able to learn from them.

It’s so nice to see everyone come in and have a supportive community- Grace Juneau

I have had an amazing time working with the staff and individuals at Creative Endeavors. It is so gratifying to see people come back week after week and get excited about the art they’re creating. It’s so nice to see everyone come in and have a supportive community where they can create art that they’re proud of and makes them happy. It has been an unbelievably rewarding and heartwarming part of my college experience and has enhanced my perspective of who is an artist and how talents can be cultivated!

I am very proud of what I made- David

It makes me feel happy and excited to learn from them.  The pieces I created gave me a good feeling and I loved showing them to my family.  I am very proud of what I made.

Connection is critical and this is at the heart of Saratoga Bridges’ mission- Schuyler Alig

I was able to share my passion with the artists at Creative Endeavors which taught me how useful and beneficial self-expression is. By practicing art and creating something, they were able to deliver a message. This ability to self-express not only better connects them to the world but also with themselves as well. This is something I benefit from as well. For anyone with or without a disability, connection is critical and this is at the heart of Saratoga Bridges’ mission.

I feel very good about myself as it lets me feel who I am- Donna

I enjoy doing art because it helps me relax and focus.  I sit there, pick out the colors and imagine what I want to paint. I follow their lead which makes it easier for me to paint.  She lets me do free painting so I can do it the way I want after she helps me understand the process.  I feel very good about myself as it lets me feel who I am.

Now I take what Schuyler taught me and I can use the camera to make the pictures lighter or darker- Liz

It was fun to have Schuyler help us again.  She had us go out to take pictures of things outside. The places and objects gave me more inspiration. Schuyler brought us photography books to see different techniques.  I loved looking at the pictures to get more ideas on how colors get mixed together.  Now I take what Schuyler taught me and I can use the camera to make the pictures lighter or darker.
